Speech and Language Services
The Little Falls Township Public Schools offer speech and language services for students that are eligible, based on speech and language evaluations and assessments. Services may be offered in the therapy room or in the classroom during instruction. Students who qualify for speech and language services may be seen in an individual or group setting, depending on the needs of the particular student. The role of the speech language pathologist is to provide students with optimal speech and language therapy as well as to provide indirect services to students which may include teacher and parent consultation, student observation, or providing any additional language support for students.
There are two components of speech and language therapy. Most people think that speech therapy just helps students produce the /r/ sound or corrects a lisp in a child. This form of therapy is typically referred to as articulation therapy. Articulation therapy provides the student with the correct placement of his articulators (lip, tongue, teeth, jaw), teaches the student how to produce the target sound, and subsequently, works within a specific hierarchy to produce that sound in words, sentences, and eventually, in spontaneous speech. The other component of speech and language therapy is the language piece. Language therapy may help a child communicate in a more effective and functional way by providing the student with appropriate techniques and language skills.
